Monterey County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 20-year-old Castroville man Monday for allegedly assaulting a man and stealing his car stereo, according to the sheriff’s office. Gabriel Negron was arrested at about 3:05 p.m. after deputies saw him riding a bike and attempting to conceal a car stereo under his arm near an apartment complex at the intersection of Main Street and Del Monte Avenue in Castroville. Deputies saw Negron and two accomplices riding away from the complex and went inside to investigate, the sheriff’s office said. They were immediately flagged down by the victim, who said he had been assaulted and had his car stereo stolen from his 2000 Ford Mustang. The deputies followed the suspects, and Negron turned west onto Main Street. His accomplices rode south on Del Monte Avenue. Deputies caught up to Negron and saw him throw the stereo in a driveway, the sheriff’s office said. They ordered him to get off his bike, and he complied. Deputies discovered Negron was on felony probation for grand theft. He admitted he had taken the stereo from the car but denied hitting the victim, according to the sheriff’s office. The victim came to the site of the arrest and identified Negron as the man who hit him and stole his stereo. The assault caused swelling to his face. Negron was arrested for robbery and violation of probation and taken to county jail.
