* David Lewis killed San Mateo Hillsdale Shopping Center Palo Alto community leader who co-founder of Free At Last

San Mateo police today are continuing to investigate Wednesday’s fatal shooting of a 54-year-old East Palo Alto community leader who co-founded a Peninsula nonprofit.The shooting occurred at about 5:40 p.m. in the parking lot of the Hillsdale Shopping Center at 60 31st St. The victim was taken to a hospital where he died.East Palo Alto Police Chief Ronald Davis today released a statement expressing sadness about the killing, identifying the victim as David Lewis.Lewis was a co-founder of Free At Last, an East Palo Alto nonprofit that provides services including substance abuse treatment and transitional housing.”David’s loss hits deep into the heart and soul of this community and Police Department,” Davis said.Davis called Lewis “a community leader, colleague, friend and mentor,” and said that it is because of his “tireless efforts and advocacy for parolees and formerly incarcerated persons that we now have a model parole re-entry program.”No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Davis and San Mateo police Chief Susan Manheimer are scheduled to speak at an 11:30 a.m. press conference at East Palo Alto police headquarters to address the shooting.
