* Scott Bernd arrested on suspicion of setting his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire in Brentwood

A 52-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of setting his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire in Brentwood on May 8, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Capt. Randy Champion said.Scott Bernd was arrested at about 9:15 a.m. at a residence on Laurel Drive in connection with a fire at 52 Cloverleaf Circle in Brentwood where his ex-girlfriend was staying.Bernd, who lives in an unincorporated area of Contra Costa County near Concord, allegedly admitted that he had gone to the house May 8 and used gasoline and a lighter to set fire to a pile of his ex-girlfriend’s property, Champion said.The fire grew large enough to damage the front of the home.Nobody was home when the fire was set and no injuries were reported, Champion said.The blaze caused an estimated $2,000 damage.Bernd has been booked into county jail and is being held on $300,000 bail.
