Police today identified a mother and infant who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide after a fire at a Fremont home on Tuesday evening. Investigators believe Alamelu Ramanathan, 33, killed herself and her 4-month-old daughter, Lakshmi Ashok, by shutting herself and the baby inside a bedroom and lighting the room on fire, police said today.Ramanathan’s other daughter, age 8, smelled smoke and found the bedroom door locked, then ran and alerted a neighbor, who called 911, Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran said. The fire was reported at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 4500 block of Leonato Way. Arriving firefighters saw smoke coming from an upstairs bedroom and forced entry into the room, where they found the two bodies. The father, Ramanathan’s husband, was at work when the fire started.Veteran said investigators are still trying to determine the mother’s motive. Both she and the baby appear to have died of injuries caused by the fire but toxicology tests are still under way, he said.
