Sonoma police arrested a Vacaville man Wednesday on suspicion of purchasing items from nine Sonoma businesses with fraudulent American Express traveler’s checks.Daniel Joseph Brigham, 43, was arrested around 5:15 p.m. as he entered his vehicle, Sonoma Police Chief Bret Sackett said.Brigham was booked into the Sonoma County jail for burglary, forgery, possession of fraudulent identification and obtaining goods by false pretenses, Sackett said. He posted bail and was released today.Police found several hundred dollars, a fraudulent California driver’s license and items from the stores in Brigham’s vehicle, Sackett said. Brigham bought items in a wine shop, bookstore, candle shop and knick-knack store. He purchased some $15- and $30-items with a $100 traveler’s checks and received cash back, Sackett said. The items have been returned to the stores.An employee of one of the stores became suspicious after Brigham left. The employee called the bank that issued the checks and learned they were fraudulent, then called police, Sackett said.Police also recovered other items they believe were purchased outside Sonoma.
