Police are seeking the person who reported a robbery at an Oakland bank today, prompting officers to shut down traffic on a major city street for nearly two hours only to find out no robbery had occurred, a police spokesman said.The report of a robbery in progress came in at 2:38 p.m. at the Chase bank located at 3438 Fruitvale Ave., police Officer Jeff Thomason said.The caller said five armed men went inside the bank and were robbing it, according to Thomason.Officers arrived and surrounded the bank while shutting down Fruitvale Avenue between MacArthur Boulevard and Montana Street, he said.Officers then began evacuating employees and patrons, and after interviewing them, it was determined that no robbery took place, Thomason said.Fruitvale Avenue was reopened shortly before 4:30 p.m., he said.Investigators are trying to locate the person who made the report, and if it is determined that they purposefully misled police, then false reporting charges could be filed, according to Thomason.
