A 19-year-old Antioch man who died Thursday after he was shot in the head Wednesday night in Pittsburg has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as Demonte Hayes.Pittsburg police received a call at about 9:40 p.m. reporting shots fired in the 800 block of Carpino Avenue. While officers were responding, they received a second call reporting that a man with a gunshot wound to his head had been brought to the Pittsburg Health Center, a clinic on Loveridge Road. Investigators determined that Hayes had been with a group of friends, two males and two females, on Carpino Avenue shortly before the shooting. The group got into a minivan and started to drive away, at which point somebody shot at their vehicle, striking Hayes, who was sitting in the back seat, according to Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington.Hayes’ friends continued driving to the health clinic, which is in a building that used to be a hospital. Thinking the clinic still was a hospital, they brought the victim inside looking for help.He was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Thursday. An autopsy is being performed today, according to the coroner’s office. Police were following some promising leads Thursday, Addington said, but no information about possible suspects was available today.Nobody else in the car was hurt.
