South San Francisco police are joining with the company Pet Food Express for a dog washing fundraiser on Saturday to help offset the costs of retired police canine medical costs and care.People who bring their dog in to the Pet Food Express store in San Carlos for a washing Saturday will have their money donated to the Police Department’s K-9 Unit. Dog wash tokens, which can be used any time can be purchased for $15 individually, or if you buy three, the fourth token is free. Once a police dog retires, it goes home with its handler, who is responsible for all medical costs and other care for the rest of the animal’s life. The fundraiser is geared more to help the handlers cover the unexpected costs for emergency medical procedures, since even a simple X-ray procedure can cost around $500, according to South San Francisco police Officer Blake Molyneux. The fundraiser is being held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the store located at 1129 Old County Road in San Carlos.
