A San Pablo man was arrested after a police pursuit Wednesday morning on suspicion of trying to kill an Inverness man by stabbing him and hitting him in the head with a hammer.Valerius Jerome Walters, 32, entered the 58-year-old man’s Vallejo Avenue home in Inverness around 6:30 a.m., assaulted him and fled in the victim’s 2001 white Jeep Cherokee, Marin County Sheriff’s Sgt. Debra Barry said.A volunteer with the Inverness Fire Department informed the sheriff’s office minutes later the Jeep was behind him on eastbound Sir Francis Drake Boulevard near Samuel Taylor Park, Barry said.Sheriff’s deputies located the Jeep near White’s Hill where the driver lost control, spun out, and sped west on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Barry said.The Jeep then collided with a telephone pole near Lagunitas Road in Lagunitas where deputies arrested Walters at gunpoint, Barry said. Walters was taken to Marin General Hospital for observation and the assault victim was having surgery this afternoon at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Barry said.Walters was to be booked in the Marin County jail for attempted murder, vehicle theft, robbery,making threats and evading a police officer,Barry said.The incident and the relationship between Walters and the victim is under investigation, Barry said.Walters is to be arraigned in Marin County Superior Court this afternoon, Barry said.
