An inmate who died after being found unresponsive in his San Jose jail cell last week has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as 36-year-old Porse Bao Phal.Jail staff found Phal unresponsive in his one-person cell at the Santa Clara County main jail at about 4 a.m. on March 24. Officials attempted life-saving measures but Phal was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m. Pending toxicology results will help the medical examiner’s office determine what caused his death. Phal, a San Jose resident, had been in custody since March 15 on a felony charge of auto theft and a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run, according to the county Department of Correction.
