East Bay Regional Park District police are investigating whether a man who was arrested Monday in connection with an attempted robbery on the Iron Horse Regional Trail in Walnut Creek may also be responsible for two other recent robberies on the trail, a detective said today. The attempted robbery happened at about 7:30 p.m. Monday near Lincoln Avenue, police said. The victim was able to give police a description of the suspect, and a short time later Walnut Creek police arrested a man who matched that description, East Bay Regional Park police Detective Malary Hathcox said. The victim then identified the person in custody as the man who had tried to rob her, Hathcox said. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and booked into county jail. The victim had reported that the suspect had a gun, but detectives now believe that the object was a cigarette lighter that was made to look like a small handgun, Hathcox said. Detectives were not releasing the man’s name today because they were still looking into his possible involvement in two other cases and didn’t want to compromise those investigations, Hathcox said. One of the other robberies happened earlier this month in the same area. In that case, the suspect stole an iPod. The other robbery happened at the end of February closer to Newell Avenue, but Hathcox did not have any information about the case.
