The San Bruno Police Department today is warning residents of a telephone scam in which a caller claims to know the victim’s relatives and convinces the person to send money.Most recently, a resident in the 3100 block of Sneath Lane reported receiving a call at about 12:30 p.m. on March 18 from a man who said he was a family member, police said.The caller claimed he was out of the country, and convinced the victim to wire money to Canada, according to police.A similar incident occurred March 12 in which a resident received a call from someone claiming to be an attorney for the victim’s relative, police said.The caller told the victim that the relative was in trouble, and persuaded the victim to send money to Canada as well, police said.The victims later determined the calls were phony. In both cases, the caller had known the relatives’ names.Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call the San Bruno Police Department at (650) 616-7100.
