An Oakland man was convicted of first-degree murder today for the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend’s new lover nearly three years ago.Michael Collins, 41, faces a term of at least 25 years to life in state prison when Alameda County Superior Court Judge Vernon Nakahara sentences him on April 26 for the death of Albert Hayes, 39, on Aug. 31,2007.Collins also has a previous conviction for assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutor Lindsay Walsh told jurors in her closing argument on Monday that Collins had planned to kill Hayes because he was jealous that his ex-girlfriend, who had a child with Collins, no longer wanted to see him. Collins’ attorney, Robert Shipway, argued that Collins should only be found guilty of manslaughter.
