A former football player for University of California at Berkeley was arrested Monday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a girl in her early teens in Gilroy, police said today.R.J. Xavier Garrett, 22, was taken into custody at about 12:45 p.m. Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting the girl and forcing her to stay at his house for about an hour the previous day, Gilroy police Sgt. Wes Stanford said.Garrett and the girl, whose name and age have not been released, met for the first time at a fast food restaurant on Saturday, according to Stanford. The two exchanged phone numbers and continued to communicate by phone and text message. The victim eventually agreed to meet Garrett at his home in the 8600 block of Delta Drive on Sunday, where the alleged sexual assault occurred, Stanford said. When Garrett finally let the victim leave, she went to a friend’s house and reported the assault, according to Stanford.Officers responded and used various investigative techniques to identify and locate the suspect and his home where the assault took place, Stanford said.Garrett was subsequently arrested in the area of Santa Teresa and Mantelli drives without incident, Stanford said.He was booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of sodomy on a person under 16 in which the suspect is over 21; intimidating a victim or witness; false imprisonment; and annoying or molesting a child under 18, Stanford said.Garrett played for UC Berkeley’s football team as a fullback in 2006,according to the school’s Web site.Gilroy police are asking anyone who may have had a similar experience with Garrett or anyone with additional information to contact Detective Jason Smith at (408) 846-0333.
