The murder suspect, who was shot and killed by Fremont S.W.A.T. officers in Cupertino, has been identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office as Sonny Lopez, 34. On Sunday, March 7, at approximately 10 a.m., the Fremont Police Department and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office launched a joint high-risk operation in an effort to apprehend a homicide suspect, who was wanted by Fremont Police for shooting and killing his uncle on Monday, March 1.
Lopez was also a possible suspect in the murder of a 96 year-old victim in Saratoga. Through the course of investigation, Fremont detectives learned that the suspect was staying at an apartment complex on the 10000 block of Miller Avenue in Cupertino. At approximately 2 p.m., a team of Fremont S.W.A.T. officers saw Lopez leave the apartment complex on foot.
The officers, who were in full tactical police uniform, confronted the suspect and identified themselves as police officers. When Lopez, who was armed with a handgun, fled from the officers, a foot pursuit ensued and several shots were fired. The suspect subsequently died at the scene. This case is being investigated by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
