On March 5, 2010, at 2:35 PM, gunshots were reported in the 1000 block of 30th Street. Oakland Police Department Patrol Division Officer Michael Osanna was on routine patrol and heard the gunshots. As Officer Osanna continued to investigate the gunshots he observed a vehicle fleeing from the area at a high rate of speed; citizens were able to alert Officer Osanna to the vehicle. Officer Osanna subsequently detained the two occupants of the vehicle at the intersection of 26th Street and Linden Street. Patrol Officers that had responded to the 1000 block of 30th Street located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Victor Johns, 29-years-old, and John Jones, 56-years-old, both Oakland residents. Victor Johns was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. John Jones was transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment; Jones was subsequently pronounced dead by hospital staff. Patrol Division Officers at the scene of the shooting coordinated follow-up investigative steps that led to the identification of the two subjects stopped by Officer Osanna as the suspects responsible for the shooting. The suspects were identified as Deshawn Reed, a 26-year-old, and Jason Watts, a 25-year-old, both Oakland residents. Homicide Investigators were called for follow-up investigation. The suspects were arrested for two counts of murder and investigators will present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney. These incidents were Oakland homicides number nine and ten compared to eleven homicides at this time last year.
