* Kevin Maldonado Pleads Not Guilty To The Killing Of Israel Polvo In East Palo Alto

A 20-year-old man accused of fatally shooting another man in East Palo Alto last year pleaded not guilty to murder charges in San Mateo County Superior Court this morning.Kevin Maldonado has been in custody without bail since his arrest in September 2009 on suspicion of shooting to death 21-year-old Israel Polvo earlier that month, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.He was indicted by a grand jury in early January and pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a gun by a felon at his superior court arraignment this morning. Maldonado faces about 75 years to life in prison if convicted.His co-defendant in the case, Elizabeth Puga, who was accused of driving the getaway car, pleaded no contest last October to one count of being an accessory to murder and one count of attempted murder, Wagstaffe said.She is scheduled to be sentenced March 12.A jury trial date for Maldonado was set today for July 26.
