South San Francisco police tonight announced a second arrest in a home invasion robbery in South San Francisco on Wednesday in which a couple was tied up in their home for several hours and the wife sexually assaulted. Police initially said there were three suspects, but in a news release issued late tonight said they “are not looking for any further suspects at this time.” Isaias May Navarrete, who police said is a 20-year-old unemployed dishwasher, was arrested at his San Francisco home sometime before 6 p.m. today in connection with the case, police Sgt. Joni Lee said. She declined to release further information on the case, saying the Police Department will provide details at a Friday morning news conference.
Earlier today, police announced the arrest of 33-year-old Juan Carlos Vasquez, who had worked for the couple previously doing landscaping. The attack happened at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when three men entered the couple’s home in the 300 block of Forest View Drive. The 53-year-old woman was tied up in a back bedroom and sexually assaulted by at least one of the suspects while her 74-year-old husband was bound in a different part of the home, Lee said. The suspects stole money and jewelry and fled in the couple’s Ford pickup truck. At about 2:30 p.m., the husband managed to free himself and went to a neighbor’s house because the suspects had disconnected his phone line. The neighbor called police, Lee said.
The husband and wife suffered no serious physical injuries but are likely “emotionally scarred,” Lee said. They were briefly hospitalized and then released. Just before midnight, Vasquez was arrested in the area of 15th and Mission streets in San Francisco driving the stolen pickup truck, according to Lee. Vasquez admitted to being in the home but denied any involvement in the robbery or sexual assault, Lee said. He is being held at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City. Vasquez had reportedly met the couple when he was working for a contracting company and was sent to their home about four years ago to do landscaping and other work. Since then, he had worked independently at their home several
times, but hadn’t seen the couple in about a year and a half. However, four months ago, he called them asking for work and they turned him down, Lee said.
