* Oakland Police Want to Talk to Joel Ortiz About a Murder Investigation
Published by Junior Staff Writer on February 22, 2010
The Oakland Police Department said today it’s asking for the public’s help in locating a man who’s wanted for questioning in the investigation of a homicide in September. Police said they want to find 37-year-old Joel Ortiz, whom they describe as a Hispanic man who is 5-foot-4-inches tall, weighs about 130 pounds, and has brown eyes, black hair and a brown complexion. They said he may be in the Sacramento area. Authorities want to talk to Ortiz about the death of 24-year-old Oakland resident Juan Guerra in the 9700 block of Walnut Street about 7:30 a.m. Sept. 16. Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said when officers responded to reports of a shooting, they found Guerra suffering from a gunshot wound. He said it appears an unknown suspect approached Guerra as he stood in front of his house and shot him for an unknown reason. Ambulance personnel responded to provide aid but were unable to revive Guerra and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to Thomason. Homicide investigators were called to the scene and a preliminary investigation was started.
