* James Martin Smith Of Fremont Fatally Shot By Police On Norfolk Road

Fremont police today identified a man who was shot and killed by police on Sunday after he allegedly pointed a handgun in their direction as 52-year-old James Martin Smith, of Fremont.Fremont police spokesman Detective Bill Veteran said the officers responded to a report of a family disturbance in the 3500 block of Norfolk Road at about 11:40 a.m. Sunday. They learned that a man at the home had been drinking and was armed with a handgun. Several officers arrived and contacted Smith in front of the garage while other officers evacuated Smith’s wife and 10-year-old daughter through the back of the home, Veteran said.He said the officers briefly negotiated with Smith but that Smith “raised the handgun in the direction of the officers.”Four officers then fired their weapons, killing Smith, Veteran said.The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the Police Department investigate the shooting.
