A 30-year-old Martinez man was arrested early this morning on suspicion of drunken driving after he allegedly crashed into two power poles then fled, leaving his license plate behind, Martinez police said. Police were notified shortly before 2 a.m. that an alarm system had been activated at 1165 Arnold Drive. An officer was responding to the call when he noticed a power pole on Arnold Drive that appeared to have been struck at the base.As he was investigating the damage, the officer found a license plate near the pole and spotted a second pole that had been damaged. Both poles were broken off at the base, police said. Meanwhile, a second officer spotted the vehicle the plate belonged to headed north on Morello Avenue at Arnold Drive. The driver, Aaron Demill, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run, police said. The crash caused a brief outage for nearby customers when it happened and then a second outage that began shortly after 3 a.m. as crews replaced at least one broken pole, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said. About 50 PG&E customers were affected. As of noon, only one customer was still without power. Sarkissian said power was expected to be restored to that customer later this afternoon.
