Five Union City high school students were sickened late last week after consuming brownies laced with an unknown substance, a New Haven Unified School District spokesman said today. The James Logan High School students reported becoming ill or feeling like they were under the influence between Wednesday and Friday, school district spokesman Rick La Plante said. Two of the students were in convulsions and had to be hospitalized. “All of the students are fine now,” La Plante said. He said that while some students at the school suspect the baked goods were pot brownies laced with heroin, the substance has not yet been identified.”There was apparently more to these brownies than marijuana,” La Plante said. Union City police Lt. Ben Horner said police are interviewing the students and have not made any determination about the cause of their illnesses. Police are also investigating a possible connection to similar incidents at nearby schools. A student at Conley-Caraballo High School in South Hayward was cited for possession of a pot brownie on Jan. 7, La Plante said. Students at Conley-Caraballo High School and Union City’s Cesar Chavez Middle School may have also ingested contaminated brownies, police said. Horner said it has not been confirmed that the brownies were laced with heroin, or even marijuana. “At this point there is no verifiable evidence to substantiate the fact that anyone intentionally sold or provided controlled substances on campus,” Horner said. “I have to say it would be pretty unusual for them to be laced with a narcotic like heroin,” he said. The school district on Friday sent phone messages to students’ parents advising them about the incident and asking parents to remind their children “to avoid consuming anything that they don’t know where it came from,” La Plante said.”Somebody obviously is out there to hurt our children,” La Plante said. “And that is infuriating.”
