A man accused of committing the only murder in Belmont last year but whose trial was put on hold while he was in Yolo County jail for unrelated charges delayed entering a plea at his initial arraignment in San Mateo County Superior Court this morning.Tyler Hutchinson, 21, has been in custody in Redwood City without bail since his transfer Tuesday following his November conviction and December sentencing for a residential burglary committed in Yolo County, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.He was appointed an attorney from the private defender program this morning, and a date was set next week for his plea entry, according to Wagstaffe.Hutchinson faces one count of murder with two special circumstances — murder during a robbery and murder during a burglary — making him eligible for the death penalty, Wagstaffe said.He is also charged with one count of robbery and one count of burglary for the June 2, 2009, assault on 88-year-old Albert Korn, according to Wagstaffe. The attack happened around 3:30 p.m. in Korn’s home in the 2500 block of Hallmark Drive, police said. The suspect allegedly fled in the victim’s gray, four-door 2004 Jaguar, which was later recovered on Carlmont Drive.Korn died on June 17, and Hutchinson, who had been identified as the suspect in the robbery and assault and was already in custody in Yolo County for the unrelated residential burglary, was then charged with murder.Police Chief Don Mattei at the time called the attack “one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in my law enforcement career.”Hutchinson is scheduled to return to court Jan. 28 to enter a plea.

  • THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM SOMEONE WHO LIVED WITH TYLER HUTCHINSON FATHER, AND I ALSO HAD A SON BY THIS MAN. I FEEL FOR THE FAMILY OF THE PEOPLE TYLER HARMED. YET, I ALSO HURT FOR TYLER, IF YOU HAD KNOWN HIS FATHER YOU WOULD KNOW WHY TYLER IS THE WAY HE IS. I AM SURPRIZED HE LASTED THIS LONG. HE DID NOT HAVE THE TYPE OF LIFE . THAT A NORMAL CHILD WOULD HAVE HAD, THERE WAS NO LOVE FROM HIS FATHER AND THE REASON I KNOW IS HE DID MY SON THE SAME WAY. AS A CHILD I HAD TO STOP HIS FATHER FROM BEATING MY SON. SO I KNOW WHAT TYLER GOT. HE IN HIS MIND I AM SURE THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT HE WENT THOUGH WHILE HE COMMITED THESE CRIMES. I WANT HIM TO KNOW THAT MY SON AND I LOOKED FOR HIM FOR MANY YEARS. MY SON WNTED HIM TO COME LIVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH US. TYLER I AM SO SORRY, FOR YOU AS MUCH AS I AM SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE YOU HURT. MAY GOD HAVE PITY ON YOUR SOUL.
