Police arrested a suspicious person in Hillsborough early Thursday morning who had allegedly tried to enter homes under the guise of needing to use the telephone. Officers went to the area of Black Mountain Road and Hayne Road at around 12:10 a.m. after two different residents called to report that an unknown man wearing all black clothing had allegedly rung their doorbells and asked to come in to use the telephone, according to Hillsborough police.An arriving police officer reported seeing a white Honda Civic being driven from the area at high speed with its headlights turned off. Another officer attempted to stop the vehicle for various violations, but the driver reportedly refused to pull over and a short pursuit ensued.The pursuit ended when the Honda driver crashed his vehicle into a retaining wall in the 700 block of Hayne Road, according to police.The driver, 23-year-old San Mateo resident Gerardo Figueroa, was not injured in the crash. Figueroa was allegedly found to be in possession of tools, a flashlight and a black mask and was ultimately arrested for felony evading, possession of marijuana and other offenses. Figueroa was booked into San Mateo County jail and is being held on $25,000 bail.
