A man is in critical but stable condition after being shot during a carjacking at a Hayward shopping center Wednesday night, a police lieutenant said today. The shooting was reported shortly after 10 p.m. at a shopping
center near the intersection of Santa Clara and West Jackson streets, Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey said.
Investigators believe the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of a gold 1993 Chevrolet Lumina parked in front of the Lucky Supermarket when two male suspects approached the car. A brief confrontation occurred and the victim was shot multiple times in the upper torso. He escaped from the car and collapsed near the front of the supermarket, police said. One of the suspects drove away in the victim’s car, while the other suspect fled on foot, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition this morning, Orrey said. She said the victim was coming out of surgery this morning. Investigators are hoping to learn more about the crime once he is able to talk.
