Grief counselors will be on hand at a San Pablo high school on Wednesday to help students returning from the long weekend cope with the loss of a classmate who was killed in a shooting last week. Antonio Sanders, 16, was a junior at North Campus Continuation High School, West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Marin Trujillo said.Sanders was killed in a drive-by shooting Thursday evening in North Richmond. He was shot shortly after 6:30 p.m. while standing with a group of people at the intersection of Fourth Street and Grove Avenue. Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said today there have been no arrests yet in the case but that investigators are following several leads. The district has lost several students to violence this school year, Trujillo said. “We’re devastated to hear about this loss,” he said. “This is our third death due to violent crimes.”Some students heard about Sanders’ death on Friday, including one student who was crying at school, Trujillo said. There was no school Tuesday due to a staff workday.A crisis team will be at North Campus on Wednesday, Trujillo said. “Our thoughts are with the family of Antonio,” he said. Shortly after the shooting that killed Sanders, two people were injured in a drive-by shooting in Richmond in the area of Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The sheriff’s office is working with Richmond police to determine whether the shootings are related, Lee said.
