A male suspect apparently committed suicide after being pursued by Salinas police following the attempted stop of a stolen vehicle in the city Friday morning. At about 7:15 a.m. Friday, an attempted vehicle theft was reported in the 900 block of Sage Court, but the victim interrupted a suspect that was trying to steal the vehicle, police said. The suspect jumped into another vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Edgar Galvan, and the vehicle sped away from the area, according to police. The victim gave authorities a description of the vehicle and the two suspects, and within minutes, the vehicle was spotted near the intersection of Natividad and East Boronda roads, police said. Police began pursuing the vehicle, which stopped at a dead end on Calaveras Drive, where both suspects fled on foot from the vehicle, jumping several fences, according to police. Officers eventually apprehended Galvan in the 1500 block of Colusa Place, police said. The other suspect was seen going into a home in the 1500 block of Yolo Circle, where police heard yelling and then a single gunshot. Officers forced entry into the home and found the suspect on the living room couch with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to police.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Both suspects are believed to be Sureno gang members. The identity of the dead suspect is not being released until his family has been notified of his death, police said.
Other people were inside the home where the suspect shot himself, but were not injured in the incident. The residents appear to not have any connection to the two suspects, according to police.
