A woman found stabbed to death inside a Jeep in Richmond on Tuesday has been identified, and police have arrested the driver of the car on suspicion of murder, a police sergeant said today. The Contra Costa County coroner’s office this morning identified the victim as 57-year-old Catherine Kelly, of San Pablo. At about 4 a.m. Tuesday, police received a call from a man saying he needed help. Responding officers spotted a Jeep Cherokee driving slowly down Florida Avenue between South Seventh and South Eighth streets. When they stopped the Jeep, they found Kelly dead on the floorboard inside and Vance Gattis, 57, in a daze behind the wheel, police Sgt. Bisa French said.Gattis had his eyes open but was unresponsive and was taken to a hospital. French said it was later determined that he was under the influence
of drugs. Gattis, a Richmond resident, has since been arrested on suspicion of murder, she said. French said Gattis and Kelly appear to have had a dating relationship. It appears Gattis was the one who called for help, she said. The death marks the city’s second homicide this year.
