* Jose Gonzales, 31, Arrested For Assaulting Santa Rosa Police Officer

A Santa Rosa police officer was injured Monday evening when a combative suspect allegedly struck him several times with a 3-foot staff.Police received a report at about 6:45 p.m. of a man yelling at people and punching a sign at a gas station in the area of Lewis Road and Mendocino Avenue. A responding officer found Santa Rosa resident Jose Gonzales, 31, allegedly holding a staff that he refused put down.The officer eventually used an electronic control device in an attempt to subdue Gonzales, which had little effect. Gonzales then allegedly struck the officer in the face and on his side until other officers arrived and overpowered him, police said.The officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries to his face and hands, and was later released.Gonzales was booked into Sonoma County jail for felony assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and violation of felony probation for a drug violation.
