Two people were killed and three were injured in a crash following a brief pursuit in Hayward early this morning. Sheriff’s deputies initiated a stop when a vehicle with five people in it allegedly drove erratically passed a patrol car near Mission and A streets just after midnight, Alameda County Sheriff spokesman J.D. Nelson said. Instead of stopping, the driver of the vehicle took off eastward on A Street, reportedly running through traffic lights at Mission Street and again at Foothill Boulevard, where it crashed into the trailer of a big rig, Nelson said. The vehicle was thrust completely under the truck’s trailer and propelled through the other side until it struck a light pole, Nelson said. One of the vehicle’s passengers was pronounced dead at the scene. Another was pronounced dead at a hospital. A third was hospitalized with very critical injuries, Nelson said, and a fourth with moderate injuries. The driver, a parolee, suffered minor injuries. The crash is still under investigation.
