Police have identified a man killed in a shooting in San Jose early Saturday morning as 27-year-old Daniel Booker. Booker, a San Jose resident, was shot and killed following an altercation shortly before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Second and Santa Clara streets, Officer Jermaine Thomas said. The shooting was witnessed by five police officers on foot patrol in the busy downtown area, Thomas said. Officers chased the shooter and arrested him while two off-duty medical professionals tended to Booker, police said. Booker was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police later identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old San Jose resident Walter Hughes. A manager at Toon’s nightclub at 52 E. Santa Clara St. said the shooting happened across the street from the club. The death marks San Jose’s 26th homicide of 2009.
