Salinas police are investigating a shooting that occurred near Closter Park this evening while a candlelight vigil for peace was being held at the park. The shooting was reported shortly before 5:25 p.m. on Towt Street, police said. Witnesses at the vigil reported hearing eight to 10 shots, but responding officers were not able to locate a victim. They did find an  abandoned bicycle nearby, along with evidence that a shooting had taken place in the area, according to police. Shortly after the shots were reported, a 21-year-old man arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds, police said. Investigators learned that the victim was riding his bike along Towt Street when a suspect in a newer model Nissan four-door vehicle drove by and shot at him. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his lower torso and fled the area on foot. He was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and is expected to survive, according to police. The suspect vehicle was last seen fleeing south on Towt Street and then east onto Acosta Street, police said.
