A memorial service and a reception will be held today for a Hayward man who was shot to death in front of his 13-year-old daughter as they walked their dogs to get ice cream at a neighborhood liquor store. Dublin Unified School District officials said a service for 38-year-old Thomas Cunningham, who was head custodian at Dublin Elementary School, will be held at the Callaghan Mortuary at 3833 East Ave. in Livermore at 2 p.m. today. A reception for Cunningham will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Dublin Elementary School, which is located at 7997 Vomac Drive in Dublin. Cunningham was shot to death about 10 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of B and Vermont streets in Hayward. Hayward police say they believe Cunningham was shot during a dispute with another man who took exception to one of Cunningham’s dogs sniffing at his leg. The suspect is still at large. A memorial fund has been set up to help pay the tuition for Cunningham’s daughter. Donations made out to the Thomas Ray Cunningham Fund may be made at any Well Fargo Bank branch. Police describe the suspect in Cunningham’s shooting death as is a black man between 18 and his early 20s who is between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall and has a very slight build. Police say witnesses said the suspect was wearing baggy blue jeans and a dark brown or black hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the rim of the hood. The sweatshirt may have had an orange design on the front.
