A San Rafael man who was arrested in Marinwood Sunday for violating a restraining order was found dead in a garage in Santa Venetia east of San Rafael Wednesday afternoon. The Marin County coroner’s office said an autopsy was performed Thursday on 57-year-old Mark Edward Kaopua and the cause of death is pending the results of toxicology tests, but the death does not appear to be a homicide. Kaopua, also known as Marcus Kaopua, was arrested at a residence on Elderberry Lane in Marinwood around 9:15 a.m. Sunday. He was found in a Dumpster approximately 10 feet away from the residence. A restraining order required him to stay at least 100 yards away from the residence, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s Sgt. Debra Barry said a plastic baggie containing suspected methamphetamine was found in Kaopua’s jacket when he was arrested. He was booked into the Marin County jail for violating the restraining order and possession of a controlled substance, posted $5,000 bail and was released, Barry said.Kaopua’s body was found around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in a garage at a residence at 1050 Adrian Way, the coroner’s office said.
