The mother of slain Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia is among seven candidates vying for two open seats on the council in the Nov. 3 election.Teresa Courtemanche, the mother of the 22-year-old councilman who was fatally shot on Sept. 1, 2008, is among five challengers vying for the seats of Vice Mayor John Mraz and Councilwoman Catherine “Cat” McCoy, who are running for re-election.The other challengers are Brian Travis, a Solano County sheriff’s detective, Jamie Johnson, an employment manager, German Lopez, and Gino VanGundy.Fairfield voters will also decide whether to re-elect Mayor Harry Price. Price faces challenges from Stephan Barnett, James Holiday, John W. McAuliffe, Ray Reyff and George Rivera.City Council races are also under way in Vallejo and Benicia.In Vallejo, three incumbents are among seven candidates running for three four-year seats on the council.Stephanie Gomes, Herminio R. Sunga and Tom Bartee are seeking re-election. The challengers are Sam Kurshan, Marti Brown, Jonathan Logan Jr., and Marie “Punkie” Nelson.Two Benicia City Councilmen, Mark Hughes and Alan Schwartzman, are running for re-election against Jubal Briggs and Dan Smith for two four-year seats.
