Police in Palo Alto have arrested the boyfriend of a woman found dead in the burning bedroom of the couple’s home Thursday night.Bulos Zumot, 36, who goes by the name Paul, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, police Agent Dan Ryan said. He is facing charges of murder and arson in connection with the death of Jennifer Schipsi, 29.Police and fire investigators spent four days and nights sifting through evidence at the home in the 900 block of Addison Avenue, Ryan said. Forensics and interviews indicated that Schipsi “died at the hands of another before the fire,” he said.Further investigation led to the conclusion that “the fire was set to destroy the evidence and conceal the murder,” he said.Ryan would not say exactly how Schipsi died.Zumot owns Da Hookah Spot at 235 University Ave., where police arrested him Monday evening. He and Schipsi had an “on again, off again” relationship, Ryan said. “They had incidents in the past where they had broken up and they had restraining orders issued against each other,” he said. However, the couple moved in to the small Addison Avenue home together recently, he said.Police also interviewed associates of the couple, who said that Schipsi, a real estate agent, had “disagreements and restraining orders with different people over the years,” he said.Because the investigation is ongoing, Ryan could not say exactly what tipped off investigators that the fire might be suspicious. “There were a whole host of things,” he said. “It looked a little different from the start.”Most of the fire damage was limited to the couple’s bedroom, where the two-alarm blaze began, Ryan said. Firefighters arrived at about 6:40 p.m. and contained the flames within about 15 minutes. Investigators have completed their search of the house, Ryan said, and are following up on several search warrants. Police are also trying to track down some people who attended Zumot’s recent birthday party.
