A 16-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Santa Cruz Friday night after an altercation with a group of male suspects, according to police. The stabbing was reported at about 10 p.m. Friday near the corner of Chestnut and Laurel streets, police said. Witnesses said the boy, a Santa Cruz High School student, was engaged in a verbal altercation with a group of male suspects when one of them stabbed the victim multiple times in the upper torso, according to police. An off-duty lifeguard tried to provide medical assistance to the boy, but medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene police said. Investigators are trying to determine how many suspects were involved and the motive for the attack. The Police Department has been in contact with Santa Cruz High School, and school officials are assisting in the investigation, according to police.
