* Kevin Maldanado Pleads Not Guilty To Shooting Death Of Israel Polvo Sept. 09

A 20-year-old man accused of fatally shooting another young man in East Palo Alto last month pleaded not guilty to murder charges in San Mateo County Superior Court this afternoon.Kevin Maldanado is being held without bail in the San Mateo County jail for allegedly killing 21-year-old Israel Polvo around 8:40 p.m. Sept. 6 in the 2100 block of Cooley Avenue, according to Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti. He was arrested two days after the shooting.Maldanado has been charged with murder and attempted murder for also allegedly shooting at but missing another victim. His co-defendant, 24-year-old Elizabeth Puga, is accused of driving the getaway car and has been charged with accessory to murder and attempted murder.Maldanado faces life in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted. He is scheduled to return to court Oct. 26 to set a date for his preliminary hearing.
