Oct 4, 2009 -PLEASANT HILL: UPDATE: SUSPECT WHO BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE HOUSE SHOT DEAD BY POLICE

A five-hour standoff in which a shooting suspect barricaded himself inside a Pleasant Hill home ended just before 4 p.m. today when the suspect came outside armed with a rifle and was shot dead by a SWAT officer police said. The incident began around 10:50 a.m. after Pleasant Hill police responded to a report of shots fired on Audrey Lane, police said.Officers arrived and found a man armed with a rifle at a house on Audrey Lane. The man fired shots at the officers, but none were struck, according to police.He then barricaded himself inside the home and a shelter-in-place was issued for residents on Christine and Audrey courts, as well as on Audrey and Baylor lanes.During the standoff, a male victim with two minor gunshot wounds checked himself into an area hospital. He is believed to be a known associate of the man involved in the standoff, and has since been released, police said.Authorities made attempts throughout the day to try to contact the man inside the home and negotiate with him.Officers used a loudspeaker and other diversionary devices to try to gain his cooperation but were unsuccessful. The man fired at the officers multiple times, police said. Shortly before 4 p.m., tear gas was placed in the house and the suspect responded by firing out the door at the officers, according to police.The man then came out the back door with an assault rifle and was shot by a SWAT officer, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.The Pleasant Hill Police Department, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

AT LEAST 6 P.M.

Authorities have extended a shelter-in-place in Pleasant Hill two more hours today as police work to apprehend a suspect who reportedly fired shots near a mall this morning.The shots were fired at about 10:50 a.m. on Aubrey Lane near the Sunvalley Mall. No officers have been injured.The shelter-in-place is for residents on Christine and Audrey courts, as well as on Audrey and Baylor lanes, and is effect until at least 6 p.m., police said.People in these areas have been advised to go inside and close all windows and doors. Residents should also try to stay off the phone except for emergency purposes.Both directions of Contra Costa Boulevard between Golf Club Road and Taylor Boulevard have been closed. Baylor and Audrey lanes were also
closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

A shelter-in-place has been expanded this afternoon in Pleasant Hill as police work to apprehend a suspect who reportedly fired shots on Aubrey Lane and who is now believed to be confined to a specific area, according to the Police Department.The shots were fired at about 10:50 a.m. near the Sunvalley Mall.No officers have been injured.At about 2:10 p.m., the shelter-in-place area was expanded to include houses on Christine and Audrey Courts and continues to be in effect for the blocks of Audrey and Baylor lanes, according to Pleasant Hill police.People in these areas have been advised to go inside and close all windows and doors until at least 4 p.m. Residents are also advised by police to stay off the phone except for emergency purposes.Both directions of Contra Costa Boulevard between Golf Club Road and Taylor Boulevard have been closed. Baylor and Audrey lanes were also closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

* Sunvalley Mall and Roads Closed as Police Hunt Shooter in Viking Park near Audrey and Baylor in Pleasant Hill

Both directions of Contra Costa Boulevard at Golf Club Road have been closed this afternoon in Pleasant Hill due to police activity involving an active shooter near the Sunvalley Mall, a California Highway Patrol officer said.  The armed suspect is in the Viking Park neighborhood, according to the Pleasant Hill Police Department.  People in the blocks of Audrey and Baylor lanes are advised to go inside and close all windows and doors.   Residents are also advised by police to stay off the phone except for emergency purposes.
