Published by Staff Writer on October 4, 2009
Police have arrested two people and are looking for two more in connection with a carjacking and kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy in Concord this afternoon, a police lieutenant said. Two women and the boy were stopped in traffic in a 1992 Dodge Caravan on Monument Boulevard near Victory Lane when just before 4 p.m. four suspects, at least two in Halloween masks, approached the car and pulled the women out, Concord police Lt. Darrell Graham said. The suspects brandished tire irons and got into the car, according to Graham. He said the mother of the boy asked them, “What about my son?” just before they drove away with the child still in the car.An Amber Alert was issued but almost immediately after that residents on Gilardy Drive called police and said a boy was alone in the back of a Dodge Caravan.Officers responded and confirmed it was the boy who had been taken, and he was returned safely to his mother, Graham said. The residents who reported seeing the boy told police that people with the boy had fled the neighborhood in a white Ford Explorer and a maroon Jeep Cherokee, according to Graham. At about 7:30 p.m., an officer spotted those two vehicles at a gas station on Grant Street, found at least one of the Halloween masks inside one of the vehicles, as well as other evidence, and arrested a man and woman.Graham said the 24-year-old man and 35-year-old woman are believed to be involved in the carjacking, but said it has not been determined in what way.He said the incident appears to be random and that the victims and suspects do not know each other. The man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and carjacking. The victims, including the boy, were not injured, Graham said.
