A homeless man who was shot to death outside a health clinic in Pittsburg on Sunday night during what appears to have been an attempted robbery has been identified as 45-year-old Russell Washington, a Contra Costa County deputy coroner said today. Washington was shot at about 11:50 p.m. outside the Pittsburg Health Center at 2311 Loveridge Road, Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington said.He and two other homeless men had been resting on benches outside the clinic when the gunman approached them.The gunman ordered two of the victims to surrender their property and to get down on the ground, Addington said.Washington got down on the ground but didn’t have any property to surrender, Addington said.Some sort of verbal exchange took place between Washington and the suspect and then the suspect shot Washington twice as he lay on the ground.He died from gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen, according to the coroner’s report.The other two men were not injured. They described the gunman as a black man in his late teens or early 20s. He was about 6 feet tall with a slender build and wearing light-colored pants and a dark shirt.
