A man was arrested and was in critical condition Friday after falling out of a vehicle while trying to flee from Oakland police officers Friday afternoon, according to police Officer Jeff Thomason. Shortly after 12:55 p.m., patrol officers received a report of a stolen vehicle on Auseon Avenue. Officers in the area spotted the vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup truck, as it was being driven in their direction on 98th Avenue, according to Thomason. Officers turned around on 98th Avenue and tried to make an enforcement stop while the suspect vehicle turned east onto Sunnyside Street and then north onto Warner Avenue, Thomason said. As the officers turned onto Warner Avenue, they saw a man lying next to a parked vehicle in a driveway, and saw the stolen vehicle, which had crashed about 100 yards away, according to Thomason. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical condition as of Friday, Thomason said. A preliminary investigation into the incident has determined that while the suspect was making the turn onto Warner Avenue, he fell out of the passenger side of the truck while the vehicle continued north on the street and struck parked vehicles. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the collision, and the suspect was arrested for stealing the vehicle, as well as for driving under the influence, according to Thomason. No other people were involved or injured in the incident.
