UPDATE: Sep 11, 2009 CONTRA COSTA CO.MAN ATTEMPTING TO LURE CHILDREN TO CAR SPOTTED IN CONCORD

A man who allegedly tried to lure two middle school boys to his vehicle in Pleasant Hill on Sept. 3 and again Thursday may have also been seen at an elementary school in Concord on Thursday afternoon, a Mount Diablo Unified School District official said today. On Sept. 3, a man in his 50s with gray hair and a gray moustache approached an 11-year-old boy on the Pleasant Hill Middle School campus and told him he was there to pick him up, police said.According to a letter sent to parents by the Mount Diablo Unified School District, the man called the boy by name and told him, “I need to show you the new meeting spot for your mom.”He also asked the boy, “You live in Concord, don’t you?”A younger-looking woman was in the car with the man. She had dark skin, shoulder-length black hair, a nose ring and was wearing blue hospital scrubs, according to the school district. The boy refused to go with the couple and reported the incident.”The kid handled it very well,” said Greg Rolen, general council for the Mount Diablo Unified School District. “He’s an astute young man.”In the second incident, which happened at about 2:35 p.m. Thursday, a 12-year-old Pleasant Hill Middle School boy told police he was standing on Oak Park Boulevard when a man matching the description of the suspect in the first incident drove up and asked for directions. The boy answered, and the suspect, who reportedly spoke with an accent, asked him to come closer because he couldn’t hear him.The boy refused and headed toward the library. When he turned around, the suspect had driven off, police said. Also on Thursday afternoon, a parent reported seeing a
similar-looking man videotaping students at Monte Gardens Elementary School in Concord. The parent confronted the man, who again had a thick accent, and he claimed he was a tourist, Rolen said.Concord police said they were at the elementary school this morning taking reports.Dick Nicoll, interim superintendent of the Mount Diablo Unified School District, sent letters to parents following each of the Pleasant Hill incidents. The school district has put all teachers and staff on high alert and has asked parents to talk to their children about safety. Students should be instructed to immediately contact school staff, parents or police if they see anything suspicious.Rolen said that in both the Pleasant Hill incidents, the students were alone when they were approached and the school district has asked parents to arrange for an adult to accompany their children to and from school. As a former prosecutor who worked on many sex offender cases, Rolen said he believed the man showed “pretty sophisticated and pretty
aggressive conduct.””Generally, they don’t strike twice in the same place and they don’t go onto school campuses,” Rolen said. The school district is working closely with local police departments, and police said they have increased patrol near Pleasant Hill Middle School.Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact Pleasant Hill police at (925) 288-4630.
