More than 20 current and retired members of the Berkeley Police Department and their guests will be leaving the Bay Area on Wednesday on a 219-mile bike ride to raise money to buy turkeys and other food items to give away to underprivileged people. The 25th-annual Turkey Ride will begin in Daly City on Wednesday morning, and riders will travel to the Hearst Castle in Cambria. The ride is the first since the event’s inception that will have a different start and final destination, according to police. Riders previously rode from Berkeley to Lake Tahoe. However, event organizers made the change “to entice more novices who weren’t quite ready to sign up for the South Lake Tahoe climb,” Berkeley police Sgt. Jennifer Louis said. “We plan on alternating between South Lake and a different destination from now on.”The group works in partnership with the Berkeley Boosters Association to give away more than 500 baskets of food each year, according to police.Anyone interested in making a contribution to the cause can do so through the Berkeley Boosters Association’s Web site at www.berkeleyboosters.org.
