Oakland Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan said today that the foster parents of missing 5-year-old boy Hasanni Campbell are still the main suspects in the case even though prosecutors say there’s not enough evidence to charge them at this time.In a one-minute statement to reporters, Jordan said, “We’re asking for the public’s help to solve this case and potentially re-arrest Mr. Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell.”Ross, 38, and Campbell, 30, who lived with Hasanni and another child, a 1-year-old girl, in Fremont, were arrested last Friday, but the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has declined to file charges against them, stating that there’s insufficient evidence. Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers said today, “Unfortunately, the district attorney did not find it fit to charge either Louis Ross or Miss Jennifer Campbell.” He added, however, that the investigation into the case is ongoing. In his terse statement, Jordan said, “We respect the district attorney’s opinion but we have more work to do and we’ll continue to work diligently to try to solve this case.”Ross reported to police that Hasanni, who has cerebral palsy, went missing from the parking lot of the Shuz of Rockridge shoe store in the 6000 block of College Avenue in Oakland about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 10. Jennifer Campbell works at the store. Ross told police he left Hasanni at the shoe store’s rear entrance while taking Hasanni’s 1-year-old sister into the front entrance of the store. Ross said that when he and Campbell went to let in Hasanni, he was gone. But Jordan said today that, “We strongly believe and know for a fact that Hasanni Campbell never made it to Oakland or College Avenue at 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 10.” However, Jordan didn’t offer any evidence to back up his assertion and left a brief news conference at police headquarters without taking any questions.Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason told reporters that the last time anyone other than Ross or Campbell saw Hasanni was at the Walmart store in Fremont on Aug. 6, four days before Ross reported that Hasanni was missing.Thomason gave reporters a video and pictures of Ross and Campbell with Hasanni and his sister at the store.Hasanni was wearing blue jeans, a dark jacket, a red-and-blue hat and tennis shoes at the time.Thomason said, “We need people to call in with information.”However, he said he thinks “only two people know what really happened,” referring to Ross and Campbell.Hasanni’s body hasn’t been found, but Thomason said Friday that police are no longer considering the case to be a missing-persons case and instead are investigating it as a homicide. Oakland attorney John Burris, who has consulted with Ross and Campbell, said today that, “I hope the attention now turns to trying to find Hasanni and the people who possibly kidnapped him.”He said that because Hasanni’s body hasn’t been found, “The district attorney was placed in a position where kids do turn up and are found and there’s no proof yet that Hasanni is dead.”Thomason said Oakland police won’t hold any more news conferences on the case unless there’s new information, Hasanni’s body is found or Ross and Campbell are arrested again.

  • Why isn’t John Burris, the attorney losing sleep over what happened to little Hasanni Campbell. His ex-wife and daughter are looking for the porr boy but what is John Burris doing except gathering publicity for himself. 98% of all suspects are guilty and he knows it but won’t represent them pro bono. I guess he smells a rat.

  • Louis Ross lies to the police and the FBI and walks away after incurring a huge bill for the state of California. He murders a small disabled child and never cries once but now that Jennifer Campbell has lost her job how are they going to support the new baby. Why don’t they just it up or kill that one too in foster care. You can see how evil and self-centered Ross is,. that poor little boy’s last day on earth had to be spent looking at Ross’s demented face.
