* Fairfield Gun Buyback Program In Honor Of Murdered Councilman Matt Garcia Who Was Killed By Gene Combs,Henry Williams

The Matt Garcia Foundation and Solano County law enforcement agencies are holding a firearms buyback event Saturday morning, a year after Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia’s murder on Sept. 1, 2008.The event is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1600 Union Ave., in Fairfield.Details of the gun buyback will be announced today at 10 a.m. at the Solano County Government Center at 675 Texas St.Law enforcement and the Matt Garcia Foundation are sponsoring the “Help Stop the Violence” gun buyback to make the community a safer place to live. Garcia, 22, was shot in the head outside a residence in the 5000 block of Silverado Drive and died the next day. His family donated seven of his organs. The gun used to kill Garcia was abandoned in a storage unit and later sold at a garage sale, Fairfield police said.Gene Allen Combs, 46, of Suisun City and Henry Don Williams, 33, of Fairfield have been charged with the murder. Williams is believed to have shot Garcia, who he mistakenly thought was a drug dealer who ripped him off. His trial is scheduled for Nov. 12. A trial date for Combs will be set Sept. 14.
