UPDATE: Joseph Choe Arrested For Robbing, Assaulting 80-Year-Old Women Valero Gas Station Near Capitola. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

Santa Cruz police released a surveillance photo this week to help the search for a man who allegedly knocked an 80-year-old woman to the ground, stole her purse, and used her credit card at a gas station shortly afterward, police said. The robbery was reported at about 10:40 a.m. on July 30 in the 700 block of Seaside Street, according to police.

Arriving officers found the woman had been knocked to the ground from behind and had her purse stolen. The victim, who is legally blind, suffered minor injuries, police said. She was treated at the scene and released.  Less than 30 minutes after the robbery, the victim’s credit card was used at the Valero gas station on Ocean Street, according to police. Cigarettes and other items were purchased there.

Officers did a door-to-door search on Seaside Street for possible witnesses to the robbery but were unsuccessful. Detectives are releasing a surveillance photo of the suspect using the credit card at the gas station and are asking for the community’s help in identifying the person, who is believed to be a man in his mid- to late-20s.

The suspect is wanted for robbery, cruelty to an elder adult and theft, police said.
