San Francisco police tonight are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a 27-year-old man wanted in connection with a Tuesday carjacking that followed a botched robbery attempt of a West Portal bank. Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said the suspect entered the Bank of America in the 200 block of West Portal Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. and unsuccessfully attempted to rob the bank. He then allegedly carjacked a red 2006 Honda Accord before fleeing the area, Tomioka said, adding that the suspect brandished a gun during the carjacking. The suspect has been identified as David Wehrer, police said. The stolen vehicle is a red 2006 Honda Accord with California license No. 5TCV308. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Sgt. Braconi or Sgt. Jaimerena at (415) 553-1201, or the operations center at (415) 553-1071. Tomioka said Wehrer should be considered armed and dangerous.
