A caretaker who was arrested Saturday after an elderly man she was caring for was found dead inside a hot home has been released from jail, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said today. The sheriff’s office received a phone call from the caretaker, 57-year-old Laarni Dime, at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday.Laarni reported that an elderly man who lived in the 1200 block of Discovery Bay Boulevard was not breathing, Lee said.Firefighters, an ambulance and sheriff’s deputies responded to the house and found 90-year-old George Brim dead in an upstairs bedroom, Lee said. The bedroom was extremely hot, the windows were closed and the air conditioner was not on. Earlier in the day, temperatures in parts of Contra Costa County exceeded 100 degrees, Lee said.Brim’s wife, 85-year-old Shirley Brim, was in the bedroom with her husband. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for heat-related illness. After interviewing Dime, who lived at the home with the Brims, deputies arrested her on suspicion of two counts of elder abuse, Lee said. She was booked into Contra Costa County jail and her bail was set at $100,000. On Monday, however, Dime was released from jail without being charged.Detectives were continuing to interview people today and are investigating whether the air conditioner was functional. The Contra Costa County coroner’s office is waiting for results from toxicology tests before determining George Brim’s cause of death. Those test results can take six to eight weeks and investigators will most likely wait until then to present the case to the district attorney’s office, Lee said.
