An autopsy is scheduled today for a Novato man who died after a bizarre incident at a gas station over the weekend.Novato police said 39-year-old Samuel Gager tried to smash his head through the glass window of a booth at the West Novato Shell station at 2085 Novato Blvd. around 5 a.m. Sunday.The gas station attendant told police it appeared Gager was under the influence of drugs, Capt. Jim Berg said. Police arrived in minutes and tried to restrain Gager, who began experiencing medical distress and stopped breathing when officers tried to handcuff him, Berg said.Officers gave Berg CPR and Novato Fire District paramedics took Gager to Novato Community Hospital, Berg said. Gager went into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and died a short time later, Berg said.The Marin County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an investigation into the death, independent of the Novato Police Department’s administrative investigation, Berg said.
